Leading Teams - Getting The Most From Your Time Together
with Bruce Wellman

Group leaders wear many hats at once as they bring positional responsibility, technical knowledge and information to meetings and work sessions. Knowing when and how to assert oneself with the group and when and how to integrate oneself with the group is often a delicate balancing act for mindful leaders. Skillful leaders are able to manage three simultaneous agendas with and for their groups: task focus, process skill development, and group development.

This session includes:

  • principles and formats for designing effective group work
  • developing flexibility across a continuum of interaction
  • presenting-collaborating-facilitating
  • concepts and skills for framing group purposes, tasks, and processes
  • a repertoire of strategies for energizing groups and supporting information processing
  • a toolkit of verbal and non-verbal skills and moves; and ways to increase confidence when dealing with difficult topics and difficult groups

Physical & Health Education Institute

This Institute provides health and physical education teachers the opportunity to focus on clarifying learning targets and using research-supported assessment practices to help students become engaged in their own learning process. The follow-up Professional Learning Community will assist practitioners in carrying out what they have learned during the remainder of the academic year.

Participants in this institute will:
- identify essential learning targets guiding their classes
- determine what proficiency looks like for these targets
- ensure curriculum materials, instructional strategies and assessments are aligned

Participants will dig into research on how students learn, and the role formative assessment can play in supporting learning. They will also share what their experiences have been and develop skills in these practices.

Transforming Students into Learners - Learning Community

If you are currently transforming students into learners through your use of formative classroom assessment practices, this learning community is for you. The TSiL cross-district learning community provides support, on-going professional development and collegial dialogue for educators who are clarifying learning targets with learners and using descriptive feedback, and are engaging students in peer and self assessment, setting goals, monitoring learning progress, and collaborative inquiry.

Participants ...
… reflect on how their use of these practices affects their learners.
… seek ways to refine their practice to have more impact on student learning.
… are open to and seek opportunities to share their practices with colleagues.
… are looking for ideas about strategies that would build upon what they have already done.

Benefits of engaging in this PLC ...
  • On-going support
  • Interaction & exchange with colleagues
  • Building best-practices to close the achievement gap
  • Coaching from Coach/Consultant
  • UCD graduate or CEU credit available

Participant testimonial:

I truly enjoyed both days of TSiL training.  I enjoyed bouncing ideas off of one another and I really loved seeing all the video clips of how other teachers were currently using these practices in their own classrooms. I have noticed that often times at other conferences we are given wonderful ideas but not a true understanding of how to make it work in our own classrooms. The video clips or even hearing what other teachers are doing gave me excellent ideas to implement in my classroom. One thing that really struck me during these two days is letting my students create writing rubrics with me as opposed to only me creating them.  I plan on doing that at the beginning of the year, hopefully this will set us up for an extraordinary year. Thank you very much for helping me get into TSiL training.  I am very grateful.
